LIVING

With EoE, Allergies, Asthma and a G-Tube

The dinner that almost did us in.

Ham and bean soup. Simple. Right? Well, yes for the average family. We don’t fit that category. I made a batch for Nathan and myself in the crock pot and another safer batch for the boys on the stove. I was so happy this day. Easiest dinner to throw together. No huge mess to clean up. Easy peasy.

I feed the boys before Nathan got home. They both loved it. Charlie ate his so fast I was actually in shock. So once Nathan got home I told him how much they both like it. Nathan said “Charlie can’t have legumes”. Oh crap I totally forgot. We don’t have beans or legumes on Charlie’s do not eat sheet on the cupboard. Since he is allergic to so many things in the legume family the allergist said we should stay clear of all of them. One strike for mommy on the dinner. Once Nathan got home I made the corn muffins. I started making corn muffins with milk. Nathan asked what I poured in there and reminded me he can’t have milk . Already bummed about the legumes I asked if he would finish making them with soy milk. That’s two strikes on mommy. Ding, out the muffins come. Gage is yelling for a muffin. Since he can now have corn I handed Gage a muffin. Well it wasn’t until the muffin was gone and probably an hour later it smacked me in the face GAGE IS ALLERGIC TO SOY! Three strikes, mommy’s out. I just turned a great easy dinner into an almost horrible evening. Thankfully no one had an outward reaction. Still upsets me though knowing that I could have caused some damage inside their bodies. So no more navy bean and ham soup in this house! That meal will haunt me forever. How fitting for Halloween.

I added beans to Charlie’s list on the cupboard right after I had a beer.
